Picture framing occurs when areas that are cut in with a brush appear lighter or darker in color and sheen than the surrounding rolled or sprayed areas, causing the appearance of a picture frame. The problem can be caused by uneven application of paint, paint that hasn't been mixed well, or spraying paint in small spaces.  The large surface areas of walls are usually painted with rollers. Rollers hold more paint, distribute the paint more evenly than a brush and get the job done much faster. Brushes typically are used for smaller spaces, to cut in to corners, and to paint along the trim lines. When these two painting methods meet, you can encounter a picture framing problem with paint.

Here are a few guidelines to repair and prevent this common issue:

For starters, make sure to acquire all of your paint from one source!  Not only from one brand, but even as specific as one particular store.  Despite the formulas entered into the computer being the same company wide for a particular color or color match, the machines that are used to mix the paint are not all calibrated exactly the same from store to store since they do not all have the same amount of usage. You can obviously get different colors from different stores, but do not buy the same color at multiple stores if you plan on using all of that color on the same project.

If you're already faced with a picture framing problem with paint, try to match the overlapping sections as closely as possible. This can be accomplished by the application of additional coats of paint to the cut in areas.
